Resveratrol is produced in plants via the enzyme resveratrol synthase (stilbene synthase). Phytoalexins, are compounds produced by many plants when they are infected by pathogens or physically harmed by cutting, crushing, or ultraviolet radiation. Wines made from grapes of the Pinot noir and St. Laurent varieties showed the highest level of trans-resveratrol.
Resveratrol has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Studies haven proven that it penetrates the skin barrier and it shows a significant impacts on skin aging. Resveratrol stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts, it contributes to the increase in the concentration of collagen III and it has an affinity for the estrogen protein receptors hence, it also contributes to the stimulation of collagen types I and II production.
